About brilliant Writers and their brilliant Shows

Gossip Girl

I hate it when I don’t get the chance to write my blog. Presently I have no PC at home - a state which I couldn’t have imagined myself living in just a few weeks ago. Weirdly enough after some weeks of getting used to being cut off from the outside world I find it somewhat refreshing. There is so much more to read and to check out when you let the information gather over night and the weekend. I even caught myself turning off my cell phone last Friday after work and didn’t turn it on until Saturday evening. How fun! Anyway, the only time I have left to write my blog is during my office time which is obviously a bad time. So I have to get up earlier and stay in the office later in the evenings which also sucks.

In times of strike I have come to appreciate my shows even more knowing that there most probably won’t be any after January 08. Every episode will at least be watched twice. Sometimes I wait a week (!!!!) to view an episode. In order to distract myself from thoughts about the devastatingly nonexistant TV program in 2008 I decided to rewatch all seasons of Sex and The City which totally didn’t help since it only took me about one week and now I’m back to where I started. I must say though that SATC is the only show that I can watch over and over again. It simply doesn’t get boring. Then I had the glorious idea to play a game like Monopoly or something but evidently other people still have a computer and therefore were less in the mood to play games with me. Then I became sick so all of a sudden I had even more time on my hands. I couldn’t even go running. I know I know - why don’t I get myself a back-up hobby - something like knitting or reading or picking fights?  Well I do read - at this time Hillary Clinton’s Biography and I started “Anybody Out There” by Marian Keyes. I usually love the books written by her and tend to devour them within days but this one sort of disappointed me. The book starts off really strong but after 100 pages or so the reader (the smart reader anyway) at least suspects what has happened. I went on to the last page to check whether I was right (I never ever do that normally) and I was! So why read the rest of that book when Hillary’s life is way more entertaining.

Oh, I just read this about the WGA being confident that a deal will be closed soon. I say give the writers what they want and what they’re entitled to and let’s end this strike as soon as possible!!

And before I forget it I must mention that “Womens Murder Club” on ABC is just perfect. It reminds me of the time when I was 13 and used to watch Columbo religiously every Tuesday night (with pizza) It’s the same feeling except maybe that in WMC the main characters who are solving the crimes are hot women who are also members of a cool club which makes this show even better. I will kill should it not get a second season (perhaps they (ABC) have already announced something that I’m not aware of due to the shortcoming of the world wide web in my life). WMC also gave me the opportunity to see actress Laura Harris as someone else other than Marie Warner - the cold-hearted terrorist who was willing to kill her whole family. I hadn’t seen her in any of the shows like “CSI” or “Dead like me” etc. and was first confused and then eventually glad to see her in her present role. It surprises me how some acters will always or for a long time be associated with a strong character they played during their career and how a majority of viewers will find it hard to look at them neutrally when they play a new role. I guess that can be pretty tough and challenging for the actors. For example I will always think of Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer and I will always think of “BOB” when I see Ray Wise somewhere on screen. I think a lot of people will always see Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw. Am I right or what?

Amongst other shows that should be mentioned because they are so brilliant is definitely Gossip Girl. I saw the Thanksgiving episode yesterday (yes, I know I’m behind!) and it was just so entertaining. Nothing we haven’t seen before but there was a plot, wonderful actors and somehow it had a Beverly Hills 90210 meets The O.C. in Manhattan vibe but in a good way. And I totally agree with Perez when he calls Chase Crawford a.k.a. Nate Archibald ”so so hot!!!” I just paid Perez a visit. There is so much happening out there…

Also in an effort to get you guys to watch one of the best shows on TV I will constantly emphasize how spectacular Friday Night Lights is. If this show gets cancelled I will again kill someone. If Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler don’t get an Emmy for their performances I might also kill someone. I’m not a violent person (I might give that impression) I’m just referring to Landry who has killed someone and has chosen to tell the police in last weeks episode. Hopefully not too late. He chose to do so although they were probably never going to find out. Yes yes the conscience can be a very powerful thing.

Okay will stop writing now. Bye y’all!

About saving Bambi, kidnapping Guitars and living Statues

Good Morning! To all of you who haven’t watched the season premiere of House or Greys Anatomy or Gossip Girl this post might be a little spoilerish. After having watched Greys 3 times, House twice and Gossip Girl like 4 times I am now ready to share my thoughts (or some of them) with you guys.

Greys “A Change is gonna Come“: I think Isaiah Washington and Kate Walsh are missing very much. I think in the case of Lexi Grey Chyler LeighIW we will have to get used to the fact that he won’t be coming back and I’m asking myself whether they will replace him somehow. In my opinion there was always a good balance in Seattle Grace. There was the Cardiologist/Surgeon = Preston Burke and then there was the Neurosurgeon=Derek Shepherd. Now there’s only Derek und Mark - who’s hot - but somehow Burke always gave the whole craziness a certain balance. After having seen the series premiere of Private Practice it might be a little early for Seattle Grace to say farewell to Addison for good. We will have to wait that one out. To the episode: How often did they have to show that severed arm and the shoulder of Nancy - a pregnant car accident victim? I loved the part where the dear jumps up after having received reanimation from Izzy. The scene with Izzy and George in the staircase then again was too much weirdness even for me. Especially when Izzy claims that she is now Bambi and that her mother has been shot and that she is now alone in the woods. Normally I understand metaphors pretty well but even for me this was just a bit too much. I think her mother is still alive btw. But that Bambi remark of hers as well as Lexi’s speech at the newborn station (”Cute Festival”) seem to push George into visiting Izzy at the end of the day - and episode and to confess that he is also in love with her. Totally spoilerfree I can’t wait to see what happens next. I like Lexi’s character (Played by Chyler Leigh). She is as she says herself quite awesome. She brings a fresh wind into the whole lot and I think there is a good friendship evolving between George and her. I think the whole new setup that our interns are now residents and that they now have their own interns to take care of will bring a new dynamic into the show. I appreciated the numerous Miranda Bailey scenes. All in all this season starter was just good old Greys Anatomy like we know and love it.

House “Alone”: No big surpises here either. House is without team and seems to make no effort to find himself a new team and as Wilson wisely recounts this can be explained with House’s fear of abandonment and fear of commitment. “When you hire a team or find yourself a girl-friend you risk that they might leave you”. This says Wilson is what House wants to avoid since he is obviously not over the fact that his team has left him. Although it was funny to see House brainstorm with the Janitor and dressing him up to act like a real doctor infront of the confused relatives of this weeks patient I missed his former team consisting of Chase, Foreman and Cameron. Hopefully they will be back in the next episode although we had to love how Wilson and Cuddy filled in the voids. I loved the whole storyline with the kidnapping of House’s guitar between House and Wilson. Hopefully things will freshen up a little in the next episodes. All is good the way it is but I would appreciate a few new storylines. Judging from the end of this season’s first episode we might not have to wait too long for that to happen.

Kristen BellGossip Girl: I might be sick in my head or plain stupid but everytime I hear Kristen Bell’s voice narrating I get so sad and happy at the same time. I think even if Gossip Girl was to turn out really really bad I would still watch it only to hear Kristen’s voice. I really miss Veronica Mars and I think out of all the shows that have been cancelled this year VM was the one that least deserved it and that had so much more potential for at least 3 more seasons. Anyway Gossip Girl so far is so much fun to watch. I could even imagine Kristen Bell getting a real part as the person behind Gossip Girl sometime in the future. The part would fit her well. Please anyone living in Manhattan - are there people running around in clothes like Blair and the others did during the brunch? It felt like in Cruel Intentions or in Dangerous Liasons - the movie on which Cruel intentations was based upon. I loved the living statues - do people really have living statues at their parties? Amazing. The one thing I couldn’t quite understand was Dan’s disappointment when he found out that his crush Serena had actually had a sexual life before meeting him. What was he thinking? That Serena was saving herself - for him? Please! The way he left Serena at the Hotel was simply childish. One other character I like is Kelly Rutherford playing Darla van der Woodsen - Serena’s mom. I remembered her from Melrose Place but haven’t seen any show she was in ever since. She seems to have a past with Dan’s father and judging from the witty banter between the two of them they seem to have been more than just friends. Also she seems to be having an affair with Chuck’s father who owns the Palace Hotel she and her daughter are presently living in.

So far so good - just watched an amazing season premiere of Brothers & Sisters and am still processing it. Will watch it again with my friend shortly who can’t wait to watch it either and will therefore wait to report on it.  Wouldn’t want to spoil anything so fantastic like the Walkers coming back on our TV screen! Here’s a good summary on”Home Front” for those who can’t wait

So Long!

Gossip Girl Pilot

So last night I watched Gossip Girl on the C.W. Highly anticipated by many - especially those like me who have beenGossip Girl mourning the loss of The O.C. over the last months. PLease visit www.gossipgirlonline.net for all information you may need. The plot in short form from what was to be seen in the pilot: The setting is Manhattan where privileged teenagers attend an elite private school and exclusive and fancy parties. The narrator is an anonymous blogger calling herself “Gossip Girl” who sees everything, has her spies everywhere and keeps everyone both inside and outside of the exclusive circles updated on the newest gossip. The narrater’s voice is no other than our dearest Kristen Bell’s a.k.a “Veronica Mars” a.k.a newest “Heroes” villain/superpower Hero. For a moment there in the beginning it was like watching Veronica Mars. I had totally forgotten that she had a narrating role on GG. The happier I was when I recognised the voice. At least we get to hear her voice - well until Heroes’ second season begins - then she becomes a superhero or something like that.

The writers are The O.C.’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage who, as I just saw on IMDB had also been a producer alongside Schwartz on The O.C. The main characters who have been introduced so far are Serena van der Woodsen played by Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 1 & 2)  who comes back from boarding school in Connecticut where she had ran off to after having slept with her best friend’s Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester- we know her from House MD where she was the young girl Ali who tried to seduce House) boyfriend Nate Archibald (Chase Crawford). Nate still has feelings for Serena and would like to break up with his longtime girlfriend Blair but for his father’s sake who is trying to finalize a business deal  with Blair’s volks he keeps the relationship going. By the way Meester (Blair) kind of reminds me of Minka Kelly who stars in Friday Night Lights. Think about it. In the pilot Serena meets Dan and Jenna Humphrey (Taylor Momsen and Penn Badgley) who live with their father (who is very young and playing in a band) in New York. It seems like the siblings are not “that” well off as are the rest of the characters. Jenna is trying to find her way into the popular circle at school while Dan is trying to hook up with Serena. They hit it off almost from the start.

So much for the plot. I like the show. Especially because of Schwartz’s handwriting all over it and Bell’s voice commenting like she did on Veronica Mars. Damn- I miss Veronica Mars. I swore that I wouldn’t watch the CW again because of what it did to my favorite detective but what am I supposed to do when they put her in one of their new shows. It would be wrong not to watch it right? As for now there isn’t really anything we haven’t seen before. It’s more like everything’s been put into a blender, mixed up a little and made into a new show. But not in a bad way and I also like the actors from what I’ve seen up till now. There was a strong O.C. vibe when unpopular and isolated boy (Dan) goes on a date with popular rich girl (Serena) and punches another rich guy (Chuck Bass played by Ed Westwick) in the face - saves his little sister and in the end gets the rich girl or so it seems. I also couldn’t help but briefly think about Hidden Palms, Mean Girls and even Veronica Mars - the latter was probably more due to Bell’s voice than because of the plot.

Oh and one should mention that again like in its predecessor the soundtrack is excellent. I think we can lean back, relax and give the show a couple of episodes to evolve. I’m quite confident that it will attract a great bunch of viewers. There’s a big void where Veronica Mars, The O.C. and perhaps also Gilmore Girls (not comparing Gossip Girl to Gilmore Girls although they both abbreviate with GG) have been and people will try to fill that void. I hope the C.W will give the only promising show they have on their program a legitimate chance. Isn’t it exciting - you can practically sense all the shows coming back from their hiatuses.

OK- good night!

Bell joins Heroes

Some good nKristen Bellews for all Kristen Bell fans. Our former PI has signed on to star in a multi episode arc of the upcoming season of Heroes. Read more here on Perez. I was happy about the news although I had stopped watching Heroes after the seventh episode and will have to take up watching the show although I had just categorised it as “tested and rejected”. I started watching in the beginning of the summer, very motivated and eager to watch the show after having read so many positiv reviews. I was looking very much forward to seeing some acters like Milo Ventimiglia, Ali Larter or Hayden Panettiere. After episode seven I gave up and figured that I’ve never been that much into the Sci Fi genre and that one should not force things too much even though a strong and promising show would have fit perfectly into my shrunken repartoire of weekly shows. Somehow I cannot feel enthusiastical about people with superpowers. Honestly the split-personality character of Ali Larter irritated me and parts of the storyline were just too strange. I like the Japanese guy though- he’s cute. Well anyway, I still can’t believe that Veronica Mars won’t be returning this Fall. At least we will be seeing her on TV even if that means that I have to get into watching that show again. I’m relieved she didn’t decide to sign on to “Lost”. I would have had to catch up quite a lot since I’m not watching the island show at all. I just think it’s a waste of her talent. Bell is such a phenomenal actress and she should have her own show, no broadway, no Heroes just a good and solid Kristen Bell show. Hm - I hate the CW!

I have developed a new obsession during the evening hours when I should normally watch TV like normal people. I hunt and then kill mosquitos. My mother bought several cans of biological spray that kills instantly. So my brother and I wander the rooms and will not cease the hunt and go to bed until we can be absolutely sure there ist not one single beast left. Last week a I stayed awake until 4 am hunting because everytime I lied down I heard the buzzing within seconds.I heard in the news that these insects have become much more dangerous this year since the summer has been so warm and rainy and that this is the ideal climate for them to reproduce. I even keep spiders in my appartments so that their webs help to catch these monsters. Yes I know not so exciting but this is what I do.

Have I mentioned how much I love Mr Monk? Well I love Mr Adrian Monk. Now more than ever. There are episodes when I simply fall over with laughter. I hope the writers never run out of good storylines which I can imagine isn’t always that easy. In times where the TV programs are so inconsistent and excellent shows get cancelled before you can say “veronica mars” it is always good to know that you can rely on Mr Monk returning weekly and providing you with an hour full of blissful quality time. I love that Mr Monk had “sand” shoes in “Mr Monk and the naked Man” and I thought the scene where Monk and Troy are trapped in Troys’s car in this week’s “Mr Monk and the Buried Treasure” was very excellent.

One last thought for today. “Weeds” has finally started its third season a few weeks ago and the first episodes were quite fun to watch but is it me or is Nancy getting whinier and whinier with each episode??? Ginia Bellafante has written an excellent article on the show in the NY Times. Read it here.

Oh this is a surprise!!! Can’t wait for fall. Mandy Moore in “How I met your Mother” Two good things melting together!!! Yeah!

Back on the Blog

Long time no write! I blame this primarily on the mass cancelling of 6 of my favourite shows which rendered me into a state of shock, anger and despair. Now that a few weeks have passed and I have had time to mourn extensively and also have taken up some new hopefully long-lasting series I know that life will go on. Summer and herewith the dreaded hiatus for most of the shows has begun. Apart from that my job has kept me exhausted and incapable of writing anything apart from company emails. In order to cope with stress and to balance out all the hours I am sitting at my desk I have taken up running again. This is part of my plan for 2007 to achieve extreme hotness.

I try to run 20 kilometres per week. And results can be seen already. I’m actually thinking about running my first mini marathons by fall of this year. Also, running keeps me calm and I was therefore able to reduce the fights that I have picked with my partner to about 1 per week which is impressive. So much has happened and so much time has passed that I don’t even know where to start. Maybe I will start with a few phrases regarding every show that had its series finale early this summer listed from the intensity that I will miss it downwards, oh and I will not count The. O.C. since I have already dealt with it earlier and will come to speak about it again anyway when I talk about “Hidden Palms”.

The Sopranos: 9 episodes were announced and 9 episodes were aired. Brilliant ones, memorable and spectacularly written, characters were whacked like there was no tomorrow and in the end we were presented with maybe one of the most remarkable series finale’s in TV history. In the end nobody will know for sure whether or not Tony and /or his family were killed in the diner munching onion rings except maybe for David Chase. I read that he had this ending figured out in his head for the last three years. Anyway the Sopranos will not be forgotten (I’m actually rewatching all seasons presently). Something good has ended and the writers were able to end the show on their terms and give every character a farewell storyline even if it was merely to get whacked. I heard there was a new series from the same producers with Glen Close? Might be worth watching.

Veronica Mars: Now this was and still is devastating. I wasn’t really aware that they were planning to cancel the show when the finale aired but I caught up pretty fast and had to learn that the show wasn’t getting enough viewers and therefore had to give its place to “Who’s gonna be the next Pussy Cat doll” or something??? I read in a lot of forums that Dawn Ostroff was to blame but then a few weeks ago I read this article about Ostroff and her career and it became clear that she really isn’t the one to blame for this debacle but the whole structure of the CW and that it would only make profits when producing low budget reality shows that generate a lot of viewers while producing far less costs then normal tv shows. I like how USA’s slogan “characters welcome” fits in here. Unfortunately a lot of viewers love these reality shows.

Gilmore Girls: We knew it was coming and the ending was somewhat predictable. But….at least Dave Rosenthal and his crew managed to give the show a relatively honourable ending. Everybody knows that the show wasn’t the same after A.SP. left and although I guess every fan was sad and emotional while watching the finale episode it still wasn’t so unbearable to see it go.

7th Heaven: Yeah, I had already said farewell last year so it wasn’t so hard. But still it will be missed. It gave me a feeling of security and moreover consistency. It was sort of like Mc Donald’s. You might not want to eat the food all the time but you know it’s there just in case.

The King of Queens:  Here we were sort of prepared also due to the totally long (was it 5 months??) hiatus between the first and the last episodes. Bye Doug and Carrie!

Okay gotta find myself some food. I will write about all the new as well as the returning shows when I get back. Yes there’s still hope.

About Disgusting Movies and Flying to London

Barbara NedeljakovaMy dad and I are flying to London today. Just a short trip to celebrate the persian New Year with my cousin, her husband and my aunt and uncle. I haven’t been in London since I was seven so I’m really looking forward to it. I’m also sort of scared of flying but everythings better than to sit in my office all day - I guess. The paradox is that I love planes and - for a girl - know quite a lot about planes and aerodynamic, technical backgrounds etc. I don’t know why but the more I know the more I’m scared to get on a plane.  Anyway, my partner and I are having a fight right now so it’s the right timing to get out of the office for a couple of days.

Yesderday I stumbled across a trailer of the movie Hostel 2. I was psyched since I didn’t even know they were shooting a sequel! I loved hostel part 1 although I had my hands covering my eyes throughout all the scary parts. The movie is totally disgusting and I don’t normally dig these king of horror flicks but this one fascinated me. I loved the actress Barbara Nedeljakova who plays one of the girls in the hostel and I liked that this movie actually had agood storyline. Maybe not that realistic but good.  I’m very much looking forward to Hostel Part 2.

Due to this stupid hiatus keeping me from watching some of my favorite shows I have started to watch the 24 season 2 dvd which was excellent - even the second time. Now I’m starting with season 3. I think Tony Almeida is so sexy. Why don’t I get colleagues like him? Anyway my father is also in the 24 fever so anytime you ask him to do something he responds with “copy that!” It’s funny.

I read something on TV.com/Reuters about the next season of Veronica Mars and that the writers are thinking about letting her skip the next college years and sending her straight to the FBI academy. They have sent some scripts to the Network or are planning to. I think that’s a cool idea although I can’t imagine what kind of plots they will use. Something like “The Silence of the Lambs” would be nice. I love that movie. Or something like Twin Peaks. Let’s wait whether the CW likes the idea.

Oh, important news on 30 Rock and  a possible second season - read here.

Okay, have to go back to my work. I will report about my London trip in few days.

This and That

Veronica Mars

Yesterday evening after working way too long I watched Gilmore Girls followed by Veronica Mars. I couldn’t help but wonder about Rory and Lane’s friendship. It was as far as I’ve followed the first time during Lane’s pregnancy that Rory spent time with her. At least that’s what the producers made us think. I considered it phoney when Rory became all sentimental during the party because the way I see it the two friends have shared no time or interest in each other for the last year except maybe when Rory attended Lane’s wedding. And Rory is so focused on Logan and her career that she doesn’t notice anything else right now anyway.

Lorelai was like the perfect mother and friend to both her daughter and to Lane. She’s obviously keeping herself busy and distracted in order to cope with the Christopher break-up. But I guess they will not keep us waiting for the next L&L storyline for long.

It was appreciated that the whole town was involved in Lane’s baby shower and therefore we had some entertaining moments with Kirk, Loulou, Miss Patty and co. I’m too tired (allergy pills) to recap everything that I liked or that bored me. I liked AmyD’s recap since it pretty much reflects my opinion on “Would you be my Lorelai Gilmore”

To a very brilliant Veronica Mars,  I so suspected that Tim Foyle was Dean O’Dell’s murderer and I normally suspect everyone but the murderer so I was happy to see Landry’s assistant go to jail in the end and proud that I for once lay right with my suspicions. From the beginning of this season Tim behaved like he was hiding something and it was just a matter of time until he was accused of some sort of crime. And wasn’t Veronica brilliant during class when she counted one and one together and suddenly realized who the real killer was and kept asking smart questions and it was totally clear where she was heading.

Unfortunately Landry can’t be spoken free of all charges since he “accidentally” killed Mindy Odell on the yacht she bought from her husband’s live insurance money. I am glad that they didn’t drag this mystery on for so long. I just read Jon Lachonis’ post on this episode and he says it became pretty clear who was guilty and who wasn’t so maybe I wasn’t that smart after all…. but I swear I had this “aha! he’s the killer” moment which I haven’t had before on VM so I’m sufficiently satisfied

Oh and I was relieved that Parker at least made an attempt not to date Logan and stop hanging out with him because the last thing I remembered was that Parker and Veronica were friends and at least in my circle of friends we don’t date our girl friend’s very recent ex-bfs.

I totally felt for Veronica when Logan asked her whether he could go out with Parker. Can’t he give our girl a break for a while and for once maybe stay on his own and study for a change?? Well, I guess we will see what happens soon.

I have been reading all about the gossip this week about Heigl not renewing her contract and then about the studio stating that everythings fine and that Heigl will remain a part of the cast and then the news that the cast members have been resenting and avoiding Kate Walsh ever since it was decided that she get her own spinoff.  What is it with my favorite show and all the recent negative gossip. It is starting to become annoying. Then I read this post on www.tvaddict.com and it practically put my thoughts into words:

Quote Can we all agree that we’re tired of the behind-the-scenes gossip from the set of GREY’S ANATOMY? This TV Addict says forget about Katherine Heigl and the entire cast. The only woman who deserves a raise (and a medal of honor) is showrunner and GREY’S creator Shonda Rhimes. How she manages to keep all these egomaniac actors in check while at the same time turning out twenty-two fantastic episodes is a remarkable feet in itself. ” unquote

By the way I love and totally appreciate that tvaddict.com has the “Farewell O.C. banner on the first page.

It’s Thursday in the meantime and no O.C :-(

Have to sleep now- more tomorrow…
