Shin Splint and Shows

Gossip Girl The CW

Hey everyone. Long time no writing. Because so much has happened. At least to me. I have now become a shin splint sufferer.

Shin Splint: Shin splints are pains in the front of the lower legs caused by exercise

Cause: Tibial shin splints are very common and affect both recreational and trained athletes. Runners are often affected

Source: http://www.nlm.nih.gov Medline Plus.

So there you have it -No running for the last 6-8 weeks. Instead many physician visits even more melt downs and lots of self-medicating. A huge burden for me and the people surrounding me. I know that worse happens to people all the time but for me not being able to run is pretty pretty bad. It’s so frustrating since I’ve always followed all the rules and was  self-disciplined in every aspect and still something like this happens. Anyway yesterday I tried  to shoot tiny electric currents through my leg with some device. One time my hand slipped and I accidentally turned the voltage very high. My leg is still hurting - I probably destroyed some  important blood vessels. But otherwise electro therapy seems to be quite helpful.

Watched the season premiere of Entourage on HBO yesterday. It has really been a long time since the last episode (exactly one year as just checked on www.tv.com ) so I was really excited to see Ari and the gang back in action and I really wanted and still want to fly to that place in Mexico where Vinnie and Turtle hung out over the last months. That really was a “Fantasy Island”. I didn’t totally get the story behind that script and why it was all a set up in the end. I will rewatch tonight and then hopefully get it. I loved the episode and to quote “the TV addict” “the show was over way too fast” Can’t wait until “Unlike a Virgin” next Sunday. So I have just rewatched the episode (it is now one day later) and I understood that Vinnie was used to negotiate a better deal with that other actor Emilio something. The episode didn’t get any less entertaining the second time I watched it. I love that Drama has a Girlfriend who’s hot and in France and totally gets him.

The next show I have to comment on is “Gossip Girl” Just how fabulous has it become? It also seems like the actors are actually learning to act and the show’s funny and the chemistry between the acters is noticable and it seems like the show has made a considerable leap into the right direction. The most remarkable scene in the season premiere was when Blair and Chuck were standing outside of the party while the Lord (what was his name?) was getting the car and there was so much tension and chemistry between the two that I was longing for Chuck to say those 3 words Blair was asking him to say out loud. But of course he didn’t because that would be boring and we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the twists and the drama and the constellations revealed during Blair’s party in episode two of this season. Let’s see if I got it: Blair is dating the Lord (really forgot his name) who’s mother is dating Nate (Nate is getting hotter by the episode don’t you think?) who is Blair’s ex. Chuck has sold his Night Club and given the money to Nate’s mom - Mrs Archibald because she is knee deep in financial trouble due to the departure of Mr Archibald. Nate is upset about this so he accepts the offer of Catherine - the Duchess and the Lord’s stepmother to pitch in with a little of her money. What’s wrong with Nate that he rejects financial help from his best friend but accepts money from his affair. That is just a disaster waiting to happen. Well anyway, Blair interrupts Catherine and Nate while making out and makes a deal with Catherine that she will keep quiet if she (the Duchess) accepts Blair’s relationship with the Lord. While all this happens Serena can’t keep her mind off Dan not to speak of her hands. I would be surprised if they’re not officially together be the next episode. The only one who seems to miss out is Vanessa but let’s save that storyline for when it has actually evolved into a real storyline.

What show really disappointed me to the point that I turned off the tv ( this hardly ever happens….ever) was 90210 2.0. The highlight during the first two episodes was the title music that reminded me of the original show in a way but that was about it. At least in other shows they try to compensate the lack of acting and storyline by  finding hot and beautiful actors to do the job or there’s at least good music playing while you’re waiting for the show to turn good (Hidden Palms comes to mind - I would love to watch Hidden Palms again) But none of that was to be found during BH 90210 2.0. Luckily my friend and I had fries, pizza, springrolls and brownies (yes in that order and yes -all of it) to get over our disappointment so we were able to handle it.

Speaking of the CW and its shows about rich and spoiled Teenagers lets move on to the next show called “Privileged” which I had the chance to watch earlier today. I wasn’t expecting anything big but was pleasantly surprised. A young Yale graduate writer called Megan Smith (Joanna Garcia) is offered the job to tutor the two rich grandkids of Laurel Limoges (Anne Archer) with the goal to get them into Duke University. The two girls Sage (Ashley Newbrough) and Rose (Lucy Kate Hale) have lost their parents in an accident and are living in this huge estate in Palm Beach. At least Sage isn’t too eager with Megan’s studying plans and it’ll not be such an easy mission to get both of them into studying mode. Of course there are potential love interests such as Charlie Hogan played by Michael Cassidy (you might remember him playing Zach in The O.C. or Cliff in above mentioned Hidden Palms and Will Philips (Brian Hallisay) as well as Megan’s family issues such as a sister she has had a difficult past with and a father who was overwhelmed with his single parent role - both of them also residing in Palm Beach. The music is good and the location is beautiful so with all the above factors the foundation for a good show has been laid. Let’s wait and see how it evolves and let’s hope for the best. Nowadays in a post-Gilmore Girls post-Veronica Mars post-O.C. post-Men in Trees age I have lowered my expectations while accepting that we just have to make the best of what we get and that fabulous shows just don’t come around every day.

And with these words enough of TV - will go for a swim now and enjoy the last days of summer because winter is waiting to happen and that’s something I’m not exactly looking forward to.

News

Hello my friends. It has been a long time since I’ve posted and many things have happened:Marathon

 1. I have bought the most beautiful and most comfortable little car. It’s blue and has seat heating and air condition and a cup holder - yes the cup holder is vital! I’m very proud and just a tiny bit hysterical about it. I’m one of those people who stands next to her car when somebody tries to park next to it just to watch whether he or she might accidentally damage it. Yesterday we were down by the river and a car came towards me - 4 senior citizens sitting in it and the very confident and at the same time very old driver had to swerve to the right to pass my car. He did do that and came dangerously close to my car and I naturally started to yell and made wild hand gestures but he just smiled and passed my car with perhaps 1 inch in between.  The old man made me feel like a stupid beginner (which I’m not) and I sware he couldn’t have known his car so well that he knew that there was still one inch. Yes I know. This is not really an exciting story…

2. More exciting is the fact that I mastered my first Marathon and am still alive! yey! It was the most exciting thing I have ever done. It was so hot that day and for the majority of the runners the first warm day of the season. Except for the travellers amongst us nobody had had the chance to train under these temperatures. Even before I crossed the start line I experienced side pains which accompanied me until kilometre 18 or so. Therefore I said good-bye to my time goals and replaced them with one goal - to arrive in time before they closed the finishing line. What went on in my head during km 27-32 or so is hardly describable. It is a battle between your mind and your body and your mind again. My mind kept telling me to stop, to lie down to rest and against all my ambitions to abort the race. Then another voice started speaking up and it felt as if two voices in my head (no, I am not crazy and yes other runners are experiencing the same) fought over what I was supposed to do. In the end I kept running and the elation I felt during the last few kilometres can not be compared to anything else I have ever experienced. I think finishing a marathon will always be a very special and extremely satisfying feeling but running into the home stretch and crossing the finishing line for the very first time in your life will be something that you will never forget. I just decided to buy two photos they shot of me during the final minutes. These companies must make a fortune since the pictures are totally overpriced but what are you going to do. Gotta have those pictures so that I can admire them forever.

3. Our shows are back - at least some of them. I really enjoy Desperate Housewives and especially the evolving relationship between Bree and Katherine as well as Gossip Girl. The show has developed its own special dynamic and really is entertaining to watch. Also Greys Anatamy is back and is it only me or have they increased the level of how much bowels and loose scalp we get to see? I hope they’re not doing that to up the quotes. Really, that’s not the reason I’m tuning in. Apart from that the storyline was fine and it was nice to see all the characters back in all their glory.

OK, will hopefully be back soon with more on Brothers & Sisters, Men in Trees etc.

About brilliant Writers and their brilliant Shows

Gossip Girl

I hate it when I don’t get the chance to write my blog. Presently I have no PC at home - a state which I couldn’t have imagined myself living in just a few weeks ago. Weirdly enough after some weeks of getting used to being cut off from the outside world I find it somewhat refreshing. There is so much more to read and to check out when you let the information gather over night and the weekend. I even caught myself turning off my cell phone last Friday after work and didn’t turn it on until Saturday evening. How fun! Anyway, the only time I have left to write my blog is during my office time which is obviously a bad time. So I have to get up earlier and stay in the office later in the evenings which also sucks.

In times of strike I have come to appreciate my shows even more knowing that there most probably won’t be any after January 08. Every episode will at least be watched twice. Sometimes I wait a week (!!!!) to view an episode. In order to distract myself from thoughts about the devastatingly nonexistant TV program in 2008 I decided to rewatch all seasons of Sex and The City which totally didn’t help since it only took me about one week and now I’m back to where I started. I must say though that SATC is the only show that I can watch over and over again. It simply doesn’t get boring. Then I had the glorious idea to play a game like Monopoly or something but evidently other people still have a computer and therefore were less in the mood to play games with me. Then I became sick so all of a sudden I had even more time on my hands. I couldn’t even go running. I know I know - why don’t I get myself a back-up hobby - something like knitting or reading or picking fights?  Well I do read - at this time Hillary Clinton’s Biography and I started “Anybody Out There” by Marian Keyes. I usually love the books written by her and tend to devour them within days but this one sort of disappointed me. The book starts off really strong but after 100 pages or so the reader (the smart reader anyway) at least suspects what has happened. I went on to the last page to check whether I was right (I never ever do that normally) and I was! So why read the rest of that book when Hillary’s life is way more entertaining.

Oh, I just read this about the WGA being confident that a deal will be closed soon. I say give the writers what they want and what they’re entitled to and let’s end this strike as soon as possible!!

And before I forget it I must mention that “Womens Murder Club” on ABC is just perfect. It reminds me of the time when I was 13 and used to watch Columbo religiously every Tuesday night (with pizza) It’s the same feeling except maybe that in WMC the main characters who are solving the crimes are hot women who are also members of a cool club which makes this show even better. I will kill should it not get a second season (perhaps they (ABC) have already announced something that I’m not aware of due to the shortcoming of the world wide web in my life). WMC also gave me the opportunity to see actress Laura Harris as someone else other than Marie Warner - the cold-hearted terrorist who was willing to kill her whole family. I hadn’t seen her in any of the shows like “CSI” or “Dead like me” etc. and was first confused and then eventually glad to see her in her present role. It surprises me how some acters will always or for a long time be associated with a strong character they played during their career and how a majority of viewers will find it hard to look at them neutrally when they play a new role. I guess that can be pretty tough and challenging for the actors. For example I will always think of Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer and I will always think of “BOB” when I see Ray Wise somewhere on screen. I think a lot of people will always see Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw. Am I right or what?

Amongst other shows that should be mentioned because they are so brilliant is definitely Gossip Girl. I saw the Thanksgiving episode yesterday (yes, I know I’m behind!) and it was just so entertaining. Nothing we haven’t seen before but there was a plot, wonderful actors and somehow it had a Beverly Hills 90210 meets The O.C. in Manhattan vibe but in a good way. And I totally agree with Perez when he calls Chase Crawford a.k.a. Nate Archibald ”so so hot!!!” I just paid Perez a visit. There is so much happening out there…

Also in an effort to get you guys to watch one of the best shows on TV I will constantly emphasize how spectacular Friday Night Lights is. If this show gets cancelled I will again kill someone. If Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler don’t get an Emmy for their performances I might also kill someone. I’m not a violent person (I might give that impression) I’m just referring to Landry who has killed someone and has chosen to tell the police in last weeks episode. Hopefully not too late. He chose to do so although they were probably never going to find out. Yes yes the conscience can be a very powerful thing.

Okay will stop writing now. Bye y’all!

So so tired…

Brooke SmithWhat can I say? Moving sucks! I have just completed a major Office/Home moving ordeal which I wouldn’t have managed without my entourage who have helped me where they could. Thanks again to y’all! The worst part was that my internet and telephones were temporarily offline which made me feel like an alien. Oh pardon me, there was an even worse part: I wasn’t able to watch my shows for about a week and am still catching up on the recordings. There was just no time. I’m still really exhausted so that I will merely make a few comments that have been flying around in my head during the last days:

First of all: There is a lot of Brooke Smith to be seen on TV nowadays. Which answers my questions from a previous post regarding the wherabouts of Dr. Erica Hahn - Brooke’s character on Greys Anatomy. I think she’s brilliant. I was watching “the silence of the lambs” the other day where she plays Buffalo Bill’s latest victim which gets rescued by Jodie Foster. In the last episode of Greys Hahn was offered the post of Chief of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery by Webber so fortunately we will see more of her in the future. Loved her scenes with Sandra Oh. Another memorable character of hers is in Weeds where she plays the first wife of Peter Scottson and a short-time friend of Nancy.

Friday Night Lights is clearly one of the best shows I have seen lately. It stands right up there next to Brothers & Sisters at the top of my personal TV rankings. I think one of the things that make these shows so unique is the great acting and chemistry of the acters. The other shows can definately learn a thing or two from these two.

The news about the WGA leaders calling for a strike is pretty shocking and while I strongly believe that one should fight for what they believe I hope they will find an agreement rather soon and that the effects will not be that drastic. Read the full report here.

Guys you have to watch Gossip Girl. It’s perfect - sometimes they overdo it a bit - like with the masked ball (which I totally loved) but all in all it’s what we needed on TV. It seems like Desperate Housewives has finally understood what makes it lovable and the fourth season has exceeded expectations so far. Obviously the choice to put Dana Delaney a.k.a Katherine Mayfair as well as the gay couple (forgot their names-will follow up on that) on the cast of the show was one of the best decisions the directors have ever made. Right from the beginning the new characters  have been well integrated into the show’s storylines and in my opinion have already become indispensable.

I am still so damn tired that I will leave it at this and promise to share my undying wisdom with you guys in a couple of days. Tata

About saving Bambi, kidnapping Guitars and living Statues

Good Morning! To all of you who haven’t watched the season premiere of House or Greys Anatomy or Gossip Girl this post might be a little spoilerish. After having watched Greys 3 times, House twice and Gossip Girl like 4 times I am now ready to share my thoughts (or some of them) with you guys.

Greys “A Change is gonna Come“: I think Isaiah Washington and Kate Walsh are missing very much. I think in the case of Lexi Grey Chyler LeighIW we will have to get used to the fact that he won’t be coming back and I’m asking myself whether they will replace him somehow. In my opinion there was always a good balance in Seattle Grace. There was the Cardiologist/Surgeon = Preston Burke and then there was the Neurosurgeon=Derek Shepherd. Now there’s only Derek und Mark - who’s hot - but somehow Burke always gave the whole craziness a certain balance. After having seen the series premiere of Private Practice it might be a little early for Seattle Grace to say farewell to Addison for good. We will have to wait that one out. To the episode: How often did they have to show that severed arm and the shoulder of Nancy - a pregnant car accident victim? I loved the part where the dear jumps up after having received reanimation from Izzy. The scene with Izzy and George in the staircase then again was too much weirdness even for me. Especially when Izzy claims that she is now Bambi and that her mother has been shot and that she is now alone in the woods. Normally I understand metaphors pretty well but even for me this was just a bit too much. I think her mother is still alive btw. But that Bambi remark of hers as well as Lexi’s speech at the newborn station (”Cute Festival”) seem to push George into visiting Izzy at the end of the day - and episode and to confess that he is also in love with her. Totally spoilerfree I can’t wait to see what happens next. I like Lexi’s character (Played by Chyler Leigh). She is as she says herself quite awesome. She brings a fresh wind into the whole lot and I think there is a good friendship evolving between George and her. I think the whole new setup that our interns are now residents and that they now have their own interns to take care of will bring a new dynamic into the show. I appreciated the numerous Miranda Bailey scenes. All in all this season starter was just good old Greys Anatomy like we know and love it.

House “Alone”: No big surpises here either. House is without team and seems to make no effort to find himself a new team and as Wilson wisely recounts this can be explained with House’s fear of abandonment and fear of commitment. “When you hire a team or find yourself a girl-friend you risk that they might leave you”. This says Wilson is what House wants to avoid since he is obviously not over the fact that his team has left him. Although it was funny to see House brainstorm with the Janitor and dressing him up to act like a real doctor infront of the confused relatives of this weeks patient I missed his former team consisting of Chase, Foreman and Cameron. Hopefully they will be back in the next episode although we had to love how Wilson and Cuddy filled in the voids. I loved the whole storyline with the kidnapping of House’s guitar between House and Wilson. Hopefully things will freshen up a little in the next episodes. All is good the way it is but I would appreciate a few new storylines. Judging from the end of this season’s first episode we might not have to wait too long for that to happen.

Kristen BellGossip Girl: I might be sick in my head or plain stupid but everytime I hear Kristen Bell’s voice narrating I get so sad and happy at the same time. I think even if Gossip Girl was to turn out really really bad I would still watch it only to hear Kristen’s voice. I really miss Veronica Mars and I think out of all the shows that have been cancelled this year VM was the one that least deserved it and that had so much more potential for at least 3 more seasons. Anyway Gossip Girl so far is so much fun to watch. I could even imagine Kristen Bell getting a real part as the person behind Gossip Girl sometime in the future. The part would fit her well. Please anyone living in Manhattan - are there people running around in clothes like Blair and the others did during the brunch? It felt like in Cruel Intentions or in Dangerous Liasons - the movie on which Cruel intentations was based upon. I loved the living statues - do people really have living statues at their parties? Amazing. The one thing I couldn’t quite understand was Dan’s disappointment when he found out that his crush Serena had actually had a sexual life before meeting him. What was he thinking? That Serena was saving herself - for him? Please! The way he left Serena at the Hotel was simply childish. One other character I like is Kelly Rutherford playing Darla van der Woodsen - Serena’s mom. I remembered her from Melrose Place but haven’t seen any show she was in ever since. She seems to have a past with Dan’s father and judging from the witty banter between the two of them they seem to have been more than just friends. Also she seems to be having an affair with Chuck’s father who owns the Palace Hotel she and her daughter are presently living in.

So far so good - just watched an amazing season premiere of Brothers & Sisters and am still processing it. Will watch it again with my friend shortly who can’t wait to watch it either and will therefore wait to report on it.  Wouldn’t want to spoil anything so fantastic like the Walkers coming back on our TV screen! Here’s a good summary on”Home Front” for those who can’t wait

So Long!

Gossip Girl Pilot

So last night I watched Gossip Girl on the C.W. Highly anticipated by many - especially those like me who have beenGossip Girl mourning the loss of The O.C. over the last months. PLease visit www.gossipgirlonline.net for all information you may need. The plot in short form from what was to be seen in the pilot: The setting is Manhattan where privileged teenagers attend an elite private school and exclusive and fancy parties. The narrator is an anonymous blogger calling herself “Gossip Girl” who sees everything, has her spies everywhere and keeps everyone both inside and outside of the exclusive circles updated on the newest gossip. The narrater’s voice is no other than our dearest Kristen Bell’s a.k.a “Veronica Mars” a.k.a newest “Heroes” villain/superpower Hero. For a moment there in the beginning it was like watching Veronica Mars. I had totally forgotten that she had a narrating role on GG. The happier I was when I recognised the voice. At least we get to hear her voice - well until Heroes’ second season begins - then she becomes a superhero or something like that.

The writers are The O.C.’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage who, as I just saw on IMDB had also been a producer alongside Schwartz on The O.C. The main characters who have been introduced so far are Serena van der Woodsen played by Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 1 & 2)  who comes back from boarding school in Connecticut where she had ran off to after having slept with her best friend’s Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester- we know her from House MD where she was the young girl Ali who tried to seduce House) boyfriend Nate Archibald (Chase Crawford). Nate still has feelings for Serena and would like to break up with his longtime girlfriend Blair but for his father’s sake who is trying to finalize a business deal  with Blair’s volks he keeps the relationship going. By the way Meester (Blair) kind of reminds me of Minka Kelly who stars in Friday Night Lights. Think about it. In the pilot Serena meets Dan and Jenna Humphrey (Taylor Momsen and Penn Badgley) who live with their father (who is very young and playing in a band) in New York. It seems like the siblings are not “that” well off as are the rest of the characters. Jenna is trying to find her way into the popular circle at school while Dan is trying to hook up with Serena. They hit it off almost from the start.

So much for the plot. I like the show. Especially because of Schwartz’s handwriting all over it and Bell’s voice commenting like she did on Veronica Mars. Damn- I miss Veronica Mars. I swore that I wouldn’t watch the CW again because of what it did to my favorite detective but what am I supposed to do when they put her in one of their new shows. It would be wrong not to watch it right? As for now there isn’t really anything we haven’t seen before. It’s more like everything’s been put into a blender, mixed up a little and made into a new show. But not in a bad way and I also like the actors from what I’ve seen up till now. There was a strong O.C. vibe when unpopular and isolated boy (Dan) goes on a date with popular rich girl (Serena) and punches another rich guy (Chuck Bass played by Ed Westwick) in the face - saves his little sister and in the end gets the rich girl or so it seems. I also couldn’t help but briefly think about Hidden Palms, Mean Girls and even Veronica Mars - the latter was probably more due to Bell’s voice than because of the plot.

Oh and one should mention that again like in its predecessor the soundtrack is excellent. I think we can lean back, relax and give the show a couple of episodes to evolve. I’m quite confident that it will attract a great bunch of viewers. There’s a big void where Veronica Mars, The O.C. and perhaps also Gilmore Girls (not comparing Gossip Girl to Gilmore Girls although they both abbreviate with GG) have been and people will try to fill that void. I hope the C.W will give the only promising show they have on their program a legitimate chance. Isn’t it exciting - you can practically sense all the shows coming back from their hiatuses.

OK- good night!
